A File stores data and supports versioning. Files can be uploaded from your local hard disk. Files can also be checked out; once checked out, a new version cannot be uploaded by a Member other than the one who has it checked out.
A File can be uploaded using one of the following methods.
- Click "Create", select "File" and fill out the Properties as you would do for any Item.
- Click "+ Add File" and use Drag and Drop Uploading. Drag and Drop Uploading uses an ActiveX component and is detailed below.
Properties
- Supports Versioning
- Specifies whether the system will keep track of different versions of a file. NB. File Versioning requires more disk space to support the different versions of the file.
- Check out immediately
- This property is only present when creating a new File. If Supports Versioning is selected and this option is also selected, the File is checked out immediately after it has been created; no other Members will be able to upload a new version until you check the File back in.
Drag And Drop Uploading
Users who are using Internet Explorer will be able to upload files by clicking on the "+ Add Files" button and then by dragging and dropping files from their file system to the frame provided. Alternatively, users may click the "Add Files" button to select files from their file system through a browsing window.
In order to use the Drag And Drop Upload functionality users must ensure the following conditions are met:
-
Use Internet Explorer (IE). The Drag And Drop functionality is provided to users using IE. The functionality only works on machines which support ActiveX and so the Drag And Drop frame is only displayed in IE.
-
Active X turned On ActiveX must be turned on in order to allow the upload to work. To enable ActiveX in IE please follow these steps.
- Click on the Tools item in the top bar in IE.
- Select the "Internet Options..." option in the drop down menu
- Click the "Security" tab in Internet Options window.
- Select the "Internet" icon in the Security tab.
- Click the "Custom Level" button
- Enable "Download signed ActiveX controls" and "Run ActiveX controls and Plug Ins"
- Click OK button.

Pop-ups are not blocked. Pop-up blocking must be disabled on the client computer in order to allow the progress indicator window to work and for the file upload to succeed. There are many pop-up blocking schemes in current use. If you are using WinXP with Service Pack 2 please follow the directions from Microsoft. If you are using Windows Vista with IE 7 please follow these FAQs from Microsoft. If you are using the Google Toolbar please refer to . If you are using another method of blocking pop-up windows please consult its documentation if you do not know how to enable pop-up windows.
